JBM Hits the Road with Rouge Wave, Showcasing at SXSW,

Jesse Marchant, aka JBM has announced that he will be one of the opening acts on Rogue Wave’s nationwide tour which is already underway. Rogue Wave’s front man Zach Rogue was so impressed by Marchant’s enchanting vocals and songwriting arrangements at a recent live show in Boston that he asked him to immediately join the band on the road. Fresh on the heels of a month long trek with Sondre Lerche he will now jump on this coast to coast tour opening with Avi Buffalo until April 7th then Man/Miracle wrapping in Los Angeles on April 29th. JBM will make his debut at SXSW this year with an official showcase at St. Bethell Church on March 17th at 10pm. He is also set to perform at NPR’s WXPN “Coffee No Pants” party down in Austin on Saturday, March 20th at 5pm.

Marchant, who was signed to Partisan Records late last year and lauded by iTunes as a top singer/songwriter of 2009 in December, only recently immersed himself back into music writing lyrics, singing and recording. Made in just two weeks, his debut album Not Even in July embodies a meticulous and carefully crafted sound that could take a lifetime to achieve. This is a collection of ten heartfelt compositions that billow, ripple and glide by softly with measured persistence and spectral beauty.

GREG LASWELL Annouces May/June Tour Dates

Producer/songwriter Greg Laswell will be kicking off a month-long national tour for his May 4 Vanguard Records release, Take A Bow, with a show at the famed Troubadour club in Los Angeles that evening. The album, Laswell’s third for Vanguard Records, both closes and opens another chapter in the California native’s trilogy about love, loss and rebirth.

Initial response has been enthusiastic - “Take Everything,” the first single from Take A Bow, was the #3 most added song at Triple A radio in its first week. Laswell will also be previewing songs from Take A Bow with several appearances this month in Austin, TX at the South By Southwest music conference, including Paste, Filter and Hotel Café showcases (listed below).

Following his critically acclaimed fall 2009 Covers EP, which included Greg’s very personal interpretations of songs by Echo & the Bunnymen, Kristin Hersh, Mazzy Star, Morphine & Kate Bush and made Filter Magazine’s “10 best of the year), Take a Bow features 12 original compositions, including a new version of the song “Off I Go,” which was featured in the 2009 season finale of Grey’s Anatomy (one of over five placements he’s had on this show alone).

Laswell holed up in a rustic cabin near Flagstaff, AZ with just his dog for company to write, perform (he plays all the instruments) and engineer the songs that would become Take A Bow. Like fellow Californian Mark Oliver Everett (Eels), Laswell made his “band” the studio and the studio his laboratory – the results are lush without being slick, textured while still maintaining an organic feel - he’s as likely to use a “found” banjo as a sophisticated piece of recording gear. Grammy-winning producer and engineer Greg Collins (U2, Fiona Apple) mixed the album and tied the ingredients together perfectly – the songs have orchestral sweep and epic feel which provide a beautiful backdrop to Laswell’s resonant vocals and tasteful melody lines.

Since his 2006 debut release, Through Toledo, Laswell’s sonorous vocals and bleak lyrics, coupled with his engaging, bemused personality for his live appearances, have won him a devoted fanbase and comparisons to songwriters such as Jeff Buckley, Ron Sexsmith and Thom Yorke. Whether performing solo at the piano or with a full band, Laswell is a performer who always gets it right.

SUCKERS Release Wild Smile June 8 on Frenchkiss Records

MTV’s “Breakout Artist of 2010”

Rolling Stone “Hot List”

Pitchfork “Best New Music” for their summer hit "It Gets Your Body Movin”

Brooklyn four-piece SUCKERS will be releasing their debut full-length, Wild Smile, on June 8 through NYC tastemaker label Frenchkiss Records (Les Savy Fav, The Dodos, Local Natives, The Antlers and more). The album was recorded, produced and mixed in NYC by Chris Zane (Passion Pit/Walkmen), except for "It Gets Your Body Movin'" (produced by Anand Wilder and Chris Moore) and "Save Your Love For Me" (Chris Moore), and was mastered by Joe Laporta (Vampire Weekend).

The first single from the album, yet to be announced, will be released in April. In the meantime, check out the SUCKERS’ cover of The Raveonettes track "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" from their album In and Out of Control (out now on VICE Music).

SUCKERS took a different approach. Says multi-instrumentalist Pan, the band’s mysterious one-monikered member: “"The original version is super fuzzy, so our first instinct was NO FUZZ. We wanted to keep the poppy aspects of the original, but make as much of our own as we could... after messing around with it for a while, it turned into this weird 50's kinda dark Doo-Wop thing that reminds me of Twin Peaks for some reason (which actually ended up working well with the subject matter on a completely different level)."

In two short years, SUCKERS, aka Quinn Walker, Austin Fisher, Pan and Brian Aiken, emerged from their homebase at the Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with a sound and aesthetic that garnered critical acclaim both in NYC and in the online community. Those same audiences—and a nationwide mass of new converts—found themselves fully enmeshed in SUCKERS’ lush tapestry of joyous pop, style and imagination on their self-titled debut EP (produced by Yeasayer’s Anand Wilder), released in April of 2009. The EP —and its hit single, "It Gets Your Body Movin’”—launched them to global acclaim via outlets such as Rolling Stone, NME, NPR, Nylon, Under The Radar, Stereogum, Interview and many more.

With the members often simultaneously playing multiple instruments per song and singing, shouting and chanting in unison, the group’s early shows (often featuring the band in face paint and costumes) were wild affairs featuring primal beats, future sounds, trumpet blasts, religious truths and the sheer enjoyment of three one-man bands playing together. The trio knew they were missing something or someone and added drummer/keyboardist Brian Aiken, fresh off a year abroad in Hungary. With Brian on board, the band hit their stride, packing local venues and sharing bills with friends and like-minded artists as Yeasayer, MGMT, Bear In Heaven, Chairlift and Real Estate.

With multiple appearances at SxSW as well as tour dates through early June, there’ll be plenty of chances to catch the band’s euphoric live shows. Call for more information or to be serviced with Wild Smile.

SHE & HIM Announce “In The Sun” Video and New Tour Dates!

She & Him – singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel and multi-instrumentalist/producer M. Ward – are thrilled to bring you the brilliant new video from their forthcoming sophomore album, Volume Two, out on March 23rd on Merge Records. The video is for the first single from the album, a brilliant piece of pop bliss called “In the Sun.” The video, shot by director Peyton Reid (Bring It On, Yes Man), is the perfect complement to the song’s sunshine chorus. The clip premieres today on Pitchfork and can be seen here – http://www.pitchfork.com.

She & Him will also be playing select shows around Volume Two’s release and throughout the summer, including stops at this year’s Coachella, Sasquatch and Bonnaroo festivals. Tour dates are below.

Following in the footsteps of duos like The Carpenters and Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood before them, She & Him have very quickly established themselves amongst pop’s finest two-piece collaborators. Described by Zooey as a “feel-good album,” Volume Two is bolstered by rich harmonies, sweet-as-sugar melodies and Brill Building choruses. From sweeping opener “Thieves” and first single “In the Sun” (featuring guest vocals by Tilly and the Wall), to the tempo and mood shifts of “Home” and the vocals-only, hymn-like closer “If You Can’t Sleep,” Volume Two shimmers from start to finish.

Some praise for Volume Two…

“Volume Two sees the return of She & Him and with fantastic results. Any shyness surrounding Deschanel’s songwriting on the first record has melted away, and here she is unabashed, graceful and poignant. Ward has followed suit, fleshing out the production canvas right along with Deschanel’s ever-growing gusto.” – Filter

“Volume Two, as its title announces, succeeds Volume One’s charming, old-timey sensibility, relying again on Deschanel’s sweet croon to augment the already inviting tracks. (4 stars)” – Alternative Press

“She & Him have once again managed to flaunt both brains and beauty.” - Under The Radar

ANGELA McCLUSKEY You Could Start A Fight In An Empty House

McCluskey’s performance on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic will available as an iTunes podcast starting today, March 5

“McCluskey …is the anti-diva, the anti-Leona Lewis, the anti-manufactured pop star. And her voice works live just as it does on record, an incredible juxtaposition of the greats: Beth Gibbons, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. McCluskey eases emotion and soul out of her most personal obsessional ballads with an effortless cool.” – Alan McGee, Guardian UK (music legend and founder of Creation Records)

Scottish-born chanteuse and force of nature Angela McCluskey returns with her first solo album in years, You Could Start a Fight in an Empty House, her much-anticipated follow-up to her acclaimed solo debut, The Things We Do. The album’s first single, “Handle with Grace,” reunites McCluskey with her colleagues from French electropop trio Telepopmusik with incredible results; a video for the track is currently in production with directors Alex Takacs and Joe Nankin of Young Replicant (M83’s “We Own the Sky” video). Available now through iTunes, the album will be available as a physical release on June 8, 2010 through Bernadette Records, McCluskey’s imprint.

Known first for her work with the LA-based group Wild Colonials, it was McCluskey’ s Grammy-nominated dance hit, “Breathe,” recorded with Telepopmusik and picked up by Mitsubishi for use in a popular TV campaign that introduced millions to her earthy, unique voice. Along the way, McCluskey has also supported R.E.M. on tour and performed with everyone from Little Richard to Glasvegas to – most recently – New York City cabaret stars The Citizen’s Band.

Tastemaker radio station KCRW has already featured “So Good,” the album’s opening track, as a “Today’s Top Tune” download. McCluskey’s February 19, 2010 performance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” was so popular it will be available as an iTunes podcast starting March 5 and running for two weeks. You can listen here: http://bit.ly/9jk5RZ

The album is a collaborative effort that includes the eclectic songstress’s many and various friends: Joseph Arthur, Kraig Jarret Johnson (Golden Smog), Scott McCloud (Girls against Boys), Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang), Duke B (Gaea), Stephane Haeri (Telepopmusik), Paul Cantelon, Craig Wedren (Shudder to Think), Seth Rothschild, Wild Colonials and Richard Fortus (Guns n’ Roses).

So far, the positive reviews have been undeniable, with one reviewer saying: “In many ways Angela’s voice is not hers; it’s yours.” Once you hear this amazing album, you’ll have to agree. Stay tuned for performance dates. www.angelamccluskey.com

Meet the Performers at The Garden Party 2010

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

Laurel Collective

Laurel Collective are a London based collision of sound and vocals who released their techni-colored debut EP on Domino offshoot Double Six Records in 2008. Collective by name and by composition also, the six piece (whittled down from nineteen a year ago) consists of members hailing from Wales, England, Nigeria and Italy. Their music is comprised of epic mutant-pop anthems that eschew all of the genres clichés, and garnered them attention in the UK press and music scene. http://www.myspace.com/thelaurelcollective

Malachai (Bristol, UK)

Malachai are a two-piece from Bristol UK, fronted by vocalist Gee, with music by Scott. The ‘Malachai sound' – is a reflection of many things - a complete emersion in hip-hop, 60s psych, dub, dusty-grooved ambience and a variety other musical forms as well as years of crate-digging and creativity – before Bristol's musical name meant something, while genres were being created, and after the dust settled – and perhaps most importantly, a need to just simply make music. The duo’s debut album, Ugly Side of Love, was released on Domino Records in 2009. http://www.myspace.com/malachaibristol

Villagers (Dublin, IE)

Villagers is the brainchild of Conor J. O'Brien, who has already toured Ireland twice, played festivals at home and abroad, and opened for the likes of Neil Young, Wild Beasts and Cass McCombs. Villagers is about to announce details for their forthcoming debut LP, which is bound to be a heart-wrenching, melodic album full of lyrical finesse. http://www.myspace.com/wearevillagers

Admiral Radley (Sherman Oaks, CA)

Admiral Radley is the collaboration of former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle and former Grandaddy drummer Aaron Burtch with Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray of Earlimart. This will be one of the band’s first live shows. http://www.admiralradley.com/

The Kissaway Trail (Odense, Denmark)

Danish five-piece The Kissaway Trail are releasing their new album Sleep Mountain via Bella Union on April 20 and while it’s their sophomore album, it’s their first release in the States. The album is a phenomenal follow-up to the debut album that earned them 4-star reviews overseas including The Independent’s title of “debut album of the year.” Produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Sigur Ros’ Jonsi) with all five guys sharing vocal duties, four on guitar and two on keys, their sound is a brilliant sonic assault of glorious melodies, epic choruses, and high octane energy. With dramatic cadences, electronic sounds, raw guitars and heart-pounding drum patterns, Sleep Mountain spans both joyous and melancholic moods to create a contemporary, timeless and vulnerable rock album. http://www.myspace.com/thekissawaytrail

Meet the Performers at The Garden Party 2010

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS, pt. 2:

Gruff Rhys (Cardiff, Wales) As leader of Super Furry Animals Gruff Rhys has spent over a decade releasing a string of brilliantly idiosyncratic psych rock albums, including their 2001 US breakthrough Rings Around The World. The Welsh 5-piece are internationally acclaimed and enjoy an extremely ardent fanbase. Gruff's solo work includes the all Welsh language folk album Yr Atal Genhedlaeth and the more pop driven Candylion. In 2007 he formed Neon Neon with Boom Bip and their album Stainless Style was nominated for the coveted Mercury Music Prize. An extremely charismatic performer, Gruff's live shows are always entertaining affairs. He’s performing his only solo SXSW show at this year’s Garden Party. http://www.superfurry.com/

Karen Elson (Nashville, TN) - Karen Elson recently announced details of her debut album The Ghost Who Walks – to be released on Third Man/XL Records in the early summer. Produced by Jack White, The Ghost Who Walks features 11 original compositions by Karen Elson and 1 cover of a track by her Citizens Band co-hort Rachelle Garniez. The first single – the album’s title track – is released on 7” vinyl on March 17th via indie stores and the Third Man Records store in Nashville and at their pop up location in Austin. A limited edition tricolor vinyl will be available from the pop up store on March 19th. Check out the single at www.karenelson.com.

Sweet Apple (Cleveland, OH)

Sweet Apple is the powerhouse line up of Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis (drums/guitar/vocals), Cobre Verde’s Time Parnin (guitar) and John Petkovic (vocals/guitar) and Witch’s Dave Sweetapple (bass/vocals). Their forthcoming record, Love and Desperation, was recorded in Cleveland and Massachusetts and reflects the disparate sounds of all the member’s bands: catchy power-pop, crushing rock and wounded ballads. http://www.myspace.com/sweetapplesongs

YACHT (Portland, OR)

YACHT began as the creative alter ego of Jona Bechtolt, who released the first three official albums under the YACHT moniker between 2003 and 2007. In 2008, YACHT expanded to a duo with the induction of Claire L. Evans as a full member, contributing vocals to many of the songs on the critically acclaimed 2009 album See Mystery Lights. The result is dreamy and energetic digital ear candy that has left fans and critics raving. http://www.myspace.com/frightenedrabbit

Frightened Rabbit (Selkirk, Scotland)

Though the past year has seen Frightened Rabbit finally step into public view, with more extensive touring and three full-length albums now publicly available, the past few years have largely been about the band quietly, committedly honing their sound, and cultivating their art. The band have just released their third full-length album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, a collection that showcases a more fully realized sound with a broader palette, with direct and upbeat songs jostling for position with intense and brittle epics. http://www.myspace.com/frightenedrabbit

Los Campesinos! Add New North American Spring Tour Dates!

Cardiff’s most beloved septet Los Campesinos! have announced the addition of 10 new dates to their highly anticipated North American spring tour, including shows in Hoboken, NJ, Burlington, VT, Pomona, CA and San Diego, CA. Since releasing their third record, Romance is Boring (Arts & Crafts), to critical acclaim earlier this year, the band has been playing to packed houses throughout Europe. This April they will bring their amazing live show to eager audiences in cities across North America. On stage, Los Campesinos! create an extraordinary atmosphere, infusing their new songs and fan favorites with elements of urgency and excitement.

Romance is Boring, the follow-up to 2008’s We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, sees our seven heroes exploring new musical territory and delving into more complex themes than ever before. Throughout the course of the album Los Campesinos! touch on everything from uninhibited joy and football to sexual frustration and suicidal tendencies while maintaining their signature exuberance. The band uses brass, drum machines and strings for the first time on this album, creating their fullest and most intricate sound to date. Los Campesinos! shows turn causal admirers into life-long fans and keep loyal followers coming back for more. These upcoming dates are not to be missed!

Praise for Romance is Boring:

“Los Campesinos! take a huge leap forward artistically, hot-wiring classic college rock with indie techno, vintage soul and herky-jerky post-punk…Romance might be boring, but this ambitious triumph is anything but.” 4 stars – Alternative Press

“Its fun, if slightly jarring, to hear this infectiously hyperactive indie crew stretch out a little. Romance… is more slickly assured-and far less twee-than its predecessors.” – Spin

“On their third LP, the members of ‘tweexcore’ Welsh septet Los Campesinos! sidestep their usual bratty art punk to traverse some heavy territory.” – NYLON

SAM QUINN (the everybodyfields) Releases First Solo Album, May 11 on Ramseur Records

A much wiser man than myself once said, "It's time to move on. It's time to get goin'. What lies ahead I have no way of knowin'." Such is the case here. This compilation of song, steeped in hopelessness, fortified with anguish and iced with 10 years of immediate responsibility that fell into one's lap seemingly overnight, is a set of talks to myself that have been a long time coming. - Sam Quinn, 2010

In an effort to keep the good times rolling in a gleefully depressing way, Sam Quinn's latest musical incarnation finds the everybodyfields’ co-founder looking deep into his heart to deliver a collection of soul-baring songs that are part catharsis, part healing, and all beautifully written and sung. Aided by his band The Japan Ten, Quinn is stepping out in front with some new tunes, fresh faces and maybe even a new pair of brown pants. Quinn’s debut album, The Fake That Sunk 1,000 Ships, will be available on May 11 on esteemed NC indie label Ramseur Records.

Following the break-up of the everybodyfields, Quinn found himself off the touring circuit; it was time to rethink his life. “After years carrying a bass amp and wearing goodwill neckties and explaining what my band sounded like to drunk people, I found some time to spend at home,” he says. He also grew his beard to righteous proportions and quit worrying about if his suits were pressed as he confronted a painful break-up and rediscovered his way through writing the songs that became The Fake That Sunk 1,000 Ships.

“I did sort of use the pop music to work my life out. This album is so down it’s ridiculous,” he admits. “If you’re having a good time, you’re probably not doing something right. A happy song can lift you up for three-and-a-half minutes but sad song can make you feel bad a lot longer. It’s real stuff I was going through, a real bad year in my life so I just wanted to hash it out and get over it. It’s real – it’s not about hopping trains or coal mining or making liquor.”

Recorded in an abandoned barn and old milking stable in South Knoxville, TN, the recordings have a warm, organic sound of like-minded folks making music together without a lot of distractions. The songs are reflective, the harmonies are aching and heartfelt, with keening pedal steel lines, piano parts reminiscent of The Band, violin lines and songs that gently build into group sing-alongs. The songs fit like an album, with a mood that settles in and makes itself at home.

Quinn has one of those imperfect voices that breaks in all the right places and sticks with you like a memory. The songs alternately address pain and hope and often feel like confessions. On the track “Gun,” for instance, he sings, “I'm your gun and I'm loaded baby/ I could kill you tonight/ I never thought I would hurt you like I hurt you/ I can't get you out of my sight … I kill myself a little every night.”

And though The Fake That Sunk 1,000 Ships is a stunning debut, it’s no party album – it’s a late-night, driving and reflecting on the past kind of record.

Explains Quinn: “Pop songs are chemically engineered to make you feel great. These ones take a slightly different approach.” Call for more information or to be serviced with the album. Tour dates to be announced soon.

New CDs from Giant Drag & Lightspeed Champion

GIANT DRAG Swan Song EP (Roar Scratch)

It’s been nearly five years since Annie Hardy and her drummer/key bass sidekick Micah Calabrese exploded onto the scene with Hearts & Unicorns, a record that had both critics and fans dropping hefty comparisons between the first-time front woman and music’s most iconic figures such as Kurt Cobain, PJ Harvey, Kim Deal, and Kevin Shields. Now, after a respite that involved record label fall-out, creative overhaul, and overwhelming support from Giant Drag fans around the globe, the duo are back with Swan Song EP, a four-song record reminiscent of the genius work on their debut while hinting at more anything-but-average music to come. Hearts & Unicorns, released in September 2005, was one of indie rock’s most prized possessions of the year and introduced us to the unique, compelling and impetuous force that is Annie Hardy. The record received massive critical acclaim that left all of the major music publications raving including Rolling Stone, SPIN, NME, Alternative Press and Blender, while the duo graced the cover of the “Best of 2005” issue of LA Weekly and were profiled by the Los Angeles Times. European tours and a 2006 Coachella gig followed the band’s critical successes and made them the buzzed about band at SXSW. The Swan Song EP is a lifeline for Giant Drag fans hungry for new material and a wake up call for those few who may not have been privy to the band in their Hearts & Unicorns days. The four-song record encompasses Giant Drag’s trademark cacophony of whirling, dirty guitar melodies and snarling yet sultry vocals.

LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION Life is Sweet! Nice To Meet You (Domino Records)

Lightspeed Champion, AKA Dev Hynes, released his amazing new album, Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You, today via Domino Records. The record is an epic collection of twelve pop songs, two instrumental intermissions and one piano etude, colored by a palette that draws on baroque 60's pop, Girl Group harmonies, classical music and even musical theatre. Dev, along with producer and mixer Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), has assembled an eclectic grab-bag of influences: joltingly 70's guitar and synth sounds, classical piano, Serge Gainsbourg, Greek choruses shouting reprisals, Todd Rundgren, and at least one ukelele-driven moment. Marrying Dev's charming voice, his ear for timeless arrangements and his knack for crafting a memorable melody, Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You is Dev's best work to date.

Some early praise for Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You:

“The music straddles worlds…balancing the influence of Queen’s swerving rock and the Smith’s bittersweet pop.” – Wall Street Journal

“The songs here — Baroque, sometimes arch pop, touching on classic country, Bowie and Queen — begin with sharp-tongued bitterness and, slowly, with detours, work their way through to what for Mr. Hynes seems like an uncomfortable, foreign feeling: bliss.” – New York Times

“a well-done album deserving of a listen.” – YRB

Bright Eyes & Neva Dinova Re-issue One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels Out in March!

Back in 2004 two revered Nebraskan songwriters, Conor Oberst of BRIGHT EYES and Jake Bellows of NEVA DINOVA brought their respective bands together to record an EP for indie label Crank!. The collaboration, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, was the fruit of a long-time musical appreciation and the resulting record was a rare gem, a perfect fusion of like-minded talents and a precious piece of musical magic. Less of a split and more of a bona fide collaboration, with Conor and Jake dividing the songwriting duties, the original tracks were recorded by both bands in basements of houses on quiet, leafy streets in Omaha in the fall of 2003. Those tracks were mixed, tweaked, and sprinkled with magic dust by famed producer-in-residence Mike Mogis at his Presto! Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Six years later that acclaimed collectors’ item has been given a re-working and a re-release by veritable Omaha independent Saddle Creek. Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova reconvened in the fall of 2009 to write and record four brand new tracks at Mogis’ ARC Studios, creating an album-length work that includes the first new Bright Eyes material since 2007’s Cassadaga.

Frequently credited as being one of the finest songwriters of his generation, Conor Oberst is persistently lauded by enthusiastic rock critics around the globe. With Bright Eyes he has released several noteworthy albums with Saddle Creek, including the seminal 2002 album Lifted, or The Story Is In The Soil Keep Your Ear To The Ground, 2005’s I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and 2007’s Cassadaga. Oberst has also released two albums with The Mystic Valley Band on Merge Records (Conor Oberst in 2008 and Outer South in 2009) as well as one album with musical compadres Jim James, M Ward and Mike Mogis as Monsters Of Folk (last year’s eponymous release on Shangri-La).

Neva Dinova are treasured heroes of the Omaha music scene. Originally started as an impromptu songwriting collaboration between guitarist and vocalist Jake Bellows and bassist Heath Koontz, the two eventually got bored of their basement seclusion and decided to enlist the support of others. After years of playing around the mid-west, the five-piece have developed a loyal fan base and spawned an ever-expanding audience. It is Jake Bellows’ truly inspiring, poetry-based lyrics and his world-wearied vocal delivery that has won Neva Dinova legions of music fans across the country. After a self-titled release on Crank! In 2002 they continued to impress with 2005’s The Hate Yourself Change (also on Crank!) and 2008’s Saddle Creek release You May Already Be Dreaming.

The four new songs on the updated One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels are as impressive as either songwriter has ever created and each hold all of the goosebump-inducing magic for which they’re renowned.

The Kissaway Trail Announce Spring US Tour Dates

The Kissaway Trail will return to the States for the first time in 2 years this spring for a series of headlining club dates, performances at SXSW, and as main support for The Temper Trap on an extensive US jaunt. The Danish band return to America to debut songs from their new, highly anticipated release Sleep Mountain (Bella Union), produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Sigur Rós’ Jónsi). The Kissaway Trail will release their 12-track LP on April 20th, 2010.

Live, The Kissaway Trail’s music comes to life and the sheer power of all 5 members produces a wall of intricate and epic sounds. With all 5 band members sharing vocal duties, 4 on guitar and 2 on keys, the experience is truly memorable. The first single from the new album, “SDP,” has started picking up radio traction in England. Tastemaker stations like XFM and BBC 6 have already put the dramatic single in heavy rotation. The band recently released a new video for “SDP”, which premiered in the US on Filter.com. HARPER BLYNN Release Debut Album

Loneliest Generation is the debut record from Harper Blynn, a Brooklyn, NY-based based four piece named for its two principle songwriters, Pete Harper and J.Blynn. The album is on baby jackal records, formed by the band and Arthur Mann (the co-founder of Rykodisc). Produced by David Kahne (The Strokes, Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney), this is a stunning first album that presents a young band with a timeless sound that melds dead-on, glorious four-part harmonies with a finely honed sense of songcraft. It’s an album about something, as the title suggests.

Both aged 25, Harper and Blynn’s songs, as in the title track, are from the point of view of a post-jaded generation, a generation that is looking to find something worth believing in. It’s not overly earnest but it’s not simply art for art’s sake either; Harper and Blynn are not afraid to say something, to have a point of view and to deliver it with a sophisticated pop sheen.

Loneliest Generation finds Harper and Blynn unapologetically hopeful and unafraid to challenge detachment and disillusionment. Writing songs that prove it is possible to be both modern and timeless, the band prompted The Chicagoist to write that “they fulfill all of your hipstery band-approval needs... but they never come across as trying to prove that they belong in the fickle world of indie rock. They don't have to, chiefly because their brand of polished, thoughtful pop will never go out of style."

The album was recorded over 10 days in New York City and represents the band’s knack for writing catchy, hook-filled tunes with an impressive live show. Featuring drummer Sarab Singh and a Dutch bass player who goes by the name “Whynot,” the group's seemingly effortless four-part harmonies and dead-on live shows have a confidence and rock-solid feel that’s impressive for a band releasing their debut. Paste Magazine listed Harper Blynn as their #1 find at CMJ 2009, saying, "despite their Brooklyn address and hipster credentials, there's nothing remotely indie rock about the band-the harmonies recall Simon & Garfunkel, and the melodies would make Elvis Costello proud." The New York Post chose the quartet as one of six “Ready to Pop” acts selected for 2010 and influential tastemaker radio station WXPN invited them on their blog as guest editors - the guys’ droll observations of music and pop culture proved to be as entertaining as their music.

Both Harper and Blynn play guitar, with Harper switching off on keyboards on some numbers, such as soulful “Centrifugal Motion” and “Steal Your Love.” The album opens with “25 Years,” a reflection on life that raises doubts about direction and making choices that mean something, with its lingering refrain “25 years and nothing to show.” Wrote the blog Dirty Rat Bastard, “‘25 years’ combines the pop aesthetics of an upbeat Billy Bragg song with the synth melody reminiscent of MGMT’s ‘Time to Pretend’ (and you know how catchy that is).”

“The Doubt” starts with a deceptively minimal arrangement, allowing the emotional lyrics and unadorned vocal performance to draw the listener in as the song builds to a powerful, gorgeously layered ending. Harper Blynn’s songs seem instantly familiar, but you realize that you’re hearing an original new voice that just sounds right; everything just works.

Catch the band at South By Southwest 2010 and stay tuned for national tour dates to be announced soon! Call for press, interview or guest list requests.

Nicole Simone to Release Self-Titled Debut EP March 9, 2010

Nicole Simone to release debut EP including the first single “Melt” and “The Wedding Song” featuring Jason Schwartzman on drums and banjo.

Do not miss her live on February 24th in Los Angeles, CA @ The Bootleg Theatre

Although she was born in the eighties, Nicole Simone has always been fascinated with nostalgia and old films from a very young age. She writes all her music with love for creating a mood and environment of her own in which one gets transported into old movie scenes set in a David Lynch-ian smoky nightclub, where Nicole takes the stage in front of the red plush curtains.

Her haunting, intoxicating and timeless music is illustrated by a unique instrumentation of guitar, marxophone, orchestron, trumpet, mandolin, vibraphone, piano and ukulele. Nicole just completed her first EP, which will be released on March 9th 2010. On the opening track entitled, “The Wedding Song” actor/musician Jason Schwartzman lent his talents on drums and banjo.

Nicole Simone’s music can be heard in the Sundance film The Good Life starring Bill Paxton, Zooey Deschanel, and Harry Dean Stanton, as well as in the indie film Alone With Her starring Colin Hanks. Her diverse artistic influences range from Frederic Chopin to Tom Waits and New Orleans funeral processions to the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Billie Holiday and Cesária Évora.

Nicole Simone’s first music video for the song “Melt” was shot near the Joshua Tree desert. The video is an homage to one of Nicole’s favorite films, Wim Wenders Paris, Texas as well as inspired by French New Wave directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle. You can see the stunning and intriguing music video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLGc34kFxTI

FLAUNT magazine featured Nicole in their music issue alongside Bryan Ferry, Ryan Adams and Charlotte Gainsbourg. She has played support slot for artists such as Ed Harcourt, Jesca Hoop, Maria Taylor and Diane Birch.

Nicole Simone co-produced her EP with Zac Rae and Woody Jackson. Gavin Lurssen mastered the EP.

BAABA MAAL Announces First U.S. Tour In Four Years including stop at Bonnaroo Festival

Legendary Senegalese singer and star of the world stage Baaba Maal will head out on a coast to coast U.S. tour this spring, marking his first stateside dates in four years. The master musician will also make his debut on the Bonnaroo stage this June, bringing his signature blend of electronic dance elements and timeless West African musical tradition to this year’s festival. These upcoming shows will be the first opportunity for Baaba’s adoring American fans to hear tracks live from his new album Television (Palm Pictures), released last year to critical acclaim. Joining Baaba on stage are Aliou Diouf on drums, Massamba Diop on talking drum, Mbara Cisse on bass, Ibrahima Cissokho on electric guitar, Hilaire Felicien Chaby Hary on keys, Cire Sall on hoddu and Mouhamadou Lamine Sarr on percussion. The U.S. leg begins April 8th in Wisconsin and wraps May 7th at the Lake Eden Festival in North Carolina.

Jónsi Announces Spring Solo Tour!

On April 6th, Sigur Rós front man Jón “Jónsi” Thor Birgisson will release his solo debut, Go (XL Recordings), and set out on his first solo North American tour. The tour, which begins in Vancouver, BC, will see Jónsi teaming up with 59 Productions to create a dazzling stage atmosphere that will brilliantly complement his phenomenal new songs. The result is set to be one of the spring’s most incredible live shows. 59 Productions is an exciting production design team that is known for creating on-stage environments using the latest technology and artistic expertise. This magical display, coupled with Jónsi’s epic songs, will make for an incredible live music experience that should not be missed.

Additionally, Jónsi has just shot the first video for the album for the song “Go Do.” Directed by Arni & Kinski (previously responsible for no fewer than six Sigur Rós videos), the video was filmed on location in Iceland at the end of 2009, when there are only four hours of daylight. Based around a bird motif, the video reflects the song’s giddy springtime urgency, and is yet another brilliant visual from the Sigur Rós camp.

Go completes a personal journey for Jónsi away from the wordless and near-brutal sonic monoliths of Sigur Rós’ untitled ( ) album, and is a bold stride beyond the career-redefining pop of “Hoppipolla,” and even the explosive percussive assault of the last album’s “Gobbledigook.” Ecstatic, dramatic and alive, it features Jónsi’s signature vocals throughout, with the majority of the songs sung in English. Created with his free-spirited collaborators – composer Nico Muhly, percussionist Samuli Kosminen, his Riceboy Sleeps partner Alex Somers and producer Peter Katis – Go explodes from the speakers with sheer happiness and wonder, wide-eyed and eager to be heard.

GREG LASWELL Releases Take A Bow May 4 on Vangard Records

Producer/songwriter Greg Laswell returns with his third full-length release for Vanguard records, Take a Bow, which both closes and opens another chapter in the California native's journey about love, loss and rebirth. Following his critically acclaimed fall 2009 Covers EP (one of Filter magazine’s “10 best of the year”), Take a Bow features 12 original compositions including a new version of the song “Off I Go,” which was featured in the 2009 season finale of Grey’s Anatomy (one of over six placements he’s had on this show alone).

Laswell retreated to a rustic cabin near Flagstaff, AZ – his comforts were one convenience store and his dog for company – to write and record the songs that would become Take A Bow. Like fellow Californian Mark Oliver Everett (Eels), Laswell made his “band” the studio and the studio his laboratory, where he used all manner of instruments, found and treasured, and gear, simple and sophisticated, to make his most lushly textured, sonically gorgeous album to date.

The album was mixed by sonic alchemist Greg Collins, a Grammy-winning producer and engineer who’s worked with everyone from U2 to Fiona Apple and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; the results are dazzling. “Working with Greg allowed me to throw the kitchen sink at it by recording lots of tracks for each song and allowing him to deal with it in the mix,” says Laswell.

With his 2006 debut release, Through Toledo, the first album in his trilogy of heartbreak and redemption, Laswell gave listeners an intimate account of a devastating loss in his life. The Los Angeles Times wrote: “He feeds depression and dejection into his tune-making mill and out come melodic marvels that lift the spirit despite their heavy subject matter.”

His sophomore release, the critically acclaimed Three Flights from Alto Nido (2008), is a transitional album that found Laswell, if not out of the woods emotionally, at least able to look at life with hope. His songs brought comparisons to such songwriters as Jeff Buckley, Ron Sexsmith and Thom Yorke. His video for “How the Day Sounds,” an incredibly catchy song filmed in the beverage section of a grocery store, features a deadpan performance by the Laswell that garnered over 400,000 plays.

With the Covers EP, Laswell showed his ability to not just write moving songs but to interpret an eclectically selected collection of tunes, including tracks by Echo & the Bunnymen, Kristin Hersh, Mazzy Star, Morphine & Kate Bush. Laswell is as comfortable with just a piano as when he’s with a full band. On his recordings, his arrangements have an orchestral sweep and epic feel which provide a beautiful backdrop to his resonant vocals and tasteful melody lines.

He’s toured with such varied artists as Joan as Police Woman, Rachael Yamagata, Sia and many others and has become a favorite of film and TV licensing people, with his songs appearing on the aforementioned Grey’s Anatomy, CSI Miami, Friday Night Lights (and a slew of others), as well as feature films. It’s Laswell’s ability to convey raw emotion while retaining a certain dignity – even while visiting his darkest places – that makes his lyrics so compelling and moving. He has the rare ability to look outside himself and see his life as a viewer, and to set it to a soundtrack that is uniquely his own.

Laswell will be touring throughout 2010 in support of Take A Bow, including solo residency dates in select markets (see below). He will also be performing at this year’s SXSW festival. Details forthcoming.

UK Legends THE SPECIALS Plot U.S. Tour, Release Live DVD!

It would be impossible to overstate the importance of The Specials to the music scene. Despite a brief career, the Coventry band lit up the late 70’s like a comet, their melding of punk and ska creating the 2-Tone sound that is still today is held up as an influence by bands across the world, having inspired the massively popular ska scene of southern California in the 90s. Now, thirty years since the release of their debut single, “Gangsters,” The Specials will take to the road for select US dates in April. The band has already completed a 33-date UK tour that sold out in record time.

The band will kick off their US stint with a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on April 13th. The performance will be the band’s first US television performance since they played “Saturday Night Live” in 1980.

The band’s triumphant return to the live arena has been captured on film for a very special live DVD to be released on March 1, 2010. Featuring classic tracks such as “Too Much Too Young,” “Do The Dog” and “Gangsters,” the film was shot at the band’s Wolverhampton Civic Hall show on November 10th, 2009 by director Lindy Heymann. The DVD also features exclusive footage from backstage and rehearsals as well as interviews with fans explaining what the band and the gigs mean to them. Initial quantities will be available as a 2 x DVD set with a ‘two-tone’ version on the show (in black and white) on the second disc. The DVD will be available via the band’s website and Amazon.

Over two studio albums, The Specials scored eight top ten singles, including two number ones for the “Too Much Too Young” live EP and the era defining “Ghost Town.” They had two Top 5 albums and spawned a retrospective list of compilation and live albums from official releases to much sought after bootlegs. The band were rightly regarded as the starting point of the ska scene that swept the UK through 1978 and, in many ways, were emblematic of their times, their songs dealing with the confusion of a country in industrial decline whilst struggling to come to terms with multi-culturalism and a new creed which became known as Thatcherism. Their re-emergence into a Britain teetering on the edge of recession and still plagued by the same divisions and problems that they so memorably highlighted in “Ghost Town” could not seem more apt, the songs from The Specials seeming as relevant today as they did 30 years ago.

The dates are:

4/15/10 Los Angeles, CA @ Club Nokia

4/16/10 Indio, CA @ Coachella

4/19/10 Toronto, ON @ Sound Academy (ON SALE THURSDAY, 2/4 @ 10am via Ticketmaster)

4/21/10 New York, NY @ Terminal 5 (ON SALE FRIDAY, 2/5 @ 12noon via Ticketmaster)

KEVIN RUDOLF Releases “I Made It (Cash Money Heroes)” on iTunes; New Album Out Spring 2010

Producer extraordinaire and Cash Money artist, Kevin Rudolf is no stranger to the top of the radio charts. Kevin made major waves with his 2008’s monstrous, international smash “Let it Rock,” from his debut album In the City, and he arrives back on top with the infectious new single “I Made It (Cash Money Heroes),” featuring label mates, Lil Wayne, Birdman and 3x platinum British hit-maker, Jay Sean. “I Made It (Cash Money Heroes)” is released digitally this week via iTunes, and is the first single from Rudolf’s sophomore release (title forthcoming).

Kevin Rudolf was born and raised in New York City. His musical tastes and influences are rooted in rock n’ roll from the seventies and eighties, and early New York hip-hop. Picking up the guitar at an early age, Kevin experimented with various sounds and genres and soon realized he had an ear for writing a pop song, which seamlessly blended the two musical scopes of rock and hip-hop. His production and songwriting resume is highly impressive (Cobra Starship, Lil Wayne, Leona Lewis, Lifehouse, etc) but it wasn’t until Kevin moved to Miami in 2008, the new home to Cash Money Records, where his work as a solo artist was heard by its label head, Slim, and soon came to fruition. A record deal, 4 million single sales later, and a song that topped the charts for over 10 consecutive weeks, “Let It Rock” was a bonafide hit, and Kevin emerged from behind the production boards, and out into the spotlight.

It has been a wild ride for Kevin Rudolf, and it’s continuing into the new decade. “I Made It (Cash Money Heroes)” was #1 at Crossover Radio last week and is sure to continue to climb. Kevin Rudolf’s story is a modern day musical fairytale, where producers are able to emerge as successful front-men. As exemplified by Missy Elliot, Kanye West, Timbaland and Mark Ronson, producers are proving their weight in gold in the last decade…or better yet- platinum.

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE Announces New Album Details!

Broken Social Scene will be releasing their new, as-yet-untitled album on May 4th, 2010 on Arts & Crafts. Co-produced by the band and Tortoise’s John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, with additional recording at Giant Studio and The Schvitz Studio in Toronto, the new album is the follow up to their acclaimed self-titled record, released in 2005.

The new record was written and arranged by the Canadian collective’s current line-up: Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman and Sam Goldberg, Lisa Lobsinger.

The album features guest turns by BSS alumni: Leslie Feist, Amy Millan and Evan Cranley of Stars, Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw of Metric, Jason Collett, Ohad Benchetrit of Do Make Say Think and Years, John Crossingham, Marty Kinack, Leon Kingstone, Julie Penner. The record also includes contributions by John McEntire, The Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop, Tortoise’s Doug McCombs, Pavement’s Spiral Stairs, Sebastian Grainger, Poi Dog Pondering’s Susan Bells, Helen Money’s Alison Chesley and The Weakerthans’ Jason Tait.

Founded ten years ago by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Broken Social Scene very quickly established themselves as one of the most vital voices in independent music. Assembled by Drew, and made up of an assortment of musical friends, lovers, and strangers, the band emerged fully-formed from their hometown of Toronto in 2002. They were an instantly engaging energetic entity: a tightly-knit community bursting at the seams with talent, personalities, songs and many, many guitars. Their albums – which were recently regaled on many “Best of the Decade” lists for the 00’s – were cinematic, critically-acclaimed splashes of concept and melody, marrying a dizzying onslaught of sounds with finely-crafted choruses. The band’s ability to weave a plethora of voices, specific genre elements, and varied instrumentation into a postmodern aural pastiche launched them instantly onto the international stage. Between 2002 and 2009, Broken Social Scene was seemingly everywhere, touring from Mexico City to Moscow, winning Juno Awards, scoring acclaimed films like Half Nelson, making multiple appearances on late-night television shows, and more. Live, their shows were notoriously epic, cathartic affairs, sometimes lasting over three hours – the result of just wanting to keep playing. They made their own videos, created their own art work, and simply looked like they were probably having more fun together than any other band out there. As a group, or on their own, Broken Social Scene’s members released some of the 00’s most notable independent albums, predominantly from under the umbrella of their own label, Arts & Crafts, cementing their status as one of Canada’s most important musical exports.

Jakob Dylan To Release Sophomore Solo Album, Women and Country, on April 6th, 2010

Jakob Dylan will release his sophomore solo album, Women and Country, on Columbia Records on April 6th, 2010. Soulful yet striking and ripe with sublime beauty, Women and Country is the follow up to the artist’s 2008 critically acclaimed debut, Seeing Things. This new collection finds him reuniting with acclaimed Grammy and Golden Globe winning producer T Bone Burnett (Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Crazy Heart), who produced the Wallflowers' 1996 breakthrough album Bringing Down the Horse. On the release, Jakob is also joined by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, who provide back-up vocals to 8 of the album’s 11 tracks.

“I’m so happy to be collaborating with Jakob at this exciting and vital time in his life as an artist,” said T Bone Burnett. “I think this new album is an important work from a great musician.”

Recorded in Los Angeles, CA, Women and Country is the full realization of a journey Jakob Dylan began on his previous solo release Seeing Things, which hearkens back to the timeless artistry of American roots music and country blues masters. Seeing Things garnered significant critical praise for Dylan including The Los Angeles Times who called him “a gifted storyteller” and USA Today who said the release was “an evocative acoustic album that reveals the poetic grace of his lyrics and the maturity and moving power of his voice.” On Women and Country Jakob reaches new majestic heights with his voice and song-writing that are as distinct as. This, coupled with T Bone Burnett’s haunting production and the stirringly rich vocals by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, creates a powerful and melancholic experience for the listener.

Backing Jakob Dylan up on the album’s 11 songs are T Bone Burnett’s s acclaimed group of musicians including Dennis Crouch (bass), Jay Bellerose (drums), David Mansfield (fiddle & mandolin), Marc Ribot (guitar), Keefus Ciancia (keyboards), Greg Leisz (pedal steel), Darrell Leonard (trumpet), Ira Nepus (trombone) and George Bohanon (horns). Standout tracks include the opener “Nothin' But the Whole Wide World,” which sets the tone of the album, the pensive ballad “Down on Our Own Shield,” "Everybody's Hurting," which showcases Jakob and Neko’s moving harmonies and "Truth for a Truth" that features great guitar work from Marc Ribot.

Track Listing for Jakob Dylan’s new album ‘Women and Country’ is as follows:

1. Nothing But The Whole Wide World

2. Down On Our Shield

3. Lend A Hand

4. We Don’t Live Here Anymore

5. Everybody’s Hurting

7. Holy Rollers for Love

The EP will be released on February 16th, 2010 via Roar Scratch.

Hearts and Unicorns, released in September 2005, was one of indie rock’s most prized possessions of the year and introduced us to the unique, compelling and impetuous force that is Annie Hardy. Hardy’s undeniable stage presence pegged her as the bandleader to watch and critics were captivated by the way her volatile performances that meandered between detached and intensely committed.

The Swan Song EP is a lifeline for Giant Drag fans hungry for new material and a wake up call for those few who may not have been privy to the band in their Hearts and Unicorns days. The four-song record encompasses Giant Drag’s trademark cacophony of whirling, dirty guitar melodies and snarling yet sultry vocals. One viewing of the video for track “Stuff to Live For” is a welcomed reminder of the band’s tongue-in-cheek aesthetic, with the GJ Echternkamp-directed video finding Hardy pummeled with everything from glitter and confetti to pudding and canned corn to pills and fake blood.

Hardy is currently in the studio hard at work on the band’s second LP, due later this year. You can also catch her in the new short film from Spike Jonze, “I’m Here,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

On December 8th, Third Man Records will be releasing singles from Smoke Fairies and BP Fallon. This newest wave of material is a continuation of the eclectic and culturally diverse repertoire for which Third Man has become known since its inception earlier this year.

Smoke Fairies- "Gastown" b/w "The River Song"

Playing and singing together since their school days in West Sussex, Smoke Fairies (Jessica Davies & Katherine Blamire) create ethereal, dark and haunting left-of -center folk and blues songs wrapped in beautiful harmonies, with the occasional psychedelic flourish. Over the years they've played with Bryan Ferry, Richard Hawley and the Handsome Family.

Following an EP and two singles, they now release their first for Jack White's Third Man Records. The songs "Gastown" and "The River Song" were produced by Jack White and will be available on 7" vinyl and as an iTunes download.

BP Fallon - "Fame #9" b/w "BP Fallon Interview" & "I Believe in Elvis Presley"

Observant Third Man fans may remember BP Fallon from his cameo in The Dead Weather's "I Cut Like A Buffalo" video. BP has long been a legendary figure in rock and roll, putting his unique stamp on the history of popular music from his work as publicist and media guru to Led Zeppelin and T. Rex, working for the Beatles at Apple Records, managing Johnny Thunders as well as so much more.

BP's release will be the first in Third Man Records' new Spoken Word Instructional Record series, and will also mark the release of Third Man's first-ever "three-sided" 45 record - presented in their patented and exclusive 'Single Signal" sound design.

Both records will be available for pre-sale on thirdmanrecords.com starting on November 30th, and for sale in their shop at 623 7th Avenue South in Nashville starting on December 8th. Both singles will also be available for download on iTunes and as 45s available in shops worldwide.

HARPER SIMON Announces West Coast Tour Dates

Harper Simon has extended his current North American tour with 11 additional west coast dates including a special solo appearance at The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles opening for legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson. The December 6th performance is part of the "West Coast Left Coast" series, which plans on "celebrating the unique spirit of California's creative renegades."

Harper's touring act reflects his passion for musicianship and dedication to bringing a top-notch musical experience to his audience. Much like the impressive collection of artists that appear on his self-titled record, Harper Simon's morphing live band -- Harper Simon and Band (electric) -- consists of some of today's most talented players.

On these upcoming west coast dates, the line-up for Harper Simon and Band (electric) will be no exception. Money Mark, Farmer Dave Scher and The Chapin Sisters join an already impressive live band that features bass player Erik Paparazzi (Cat Power), drummer Russell Simins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), and guitarist Mike Bloom (The Elected).

Perhaps best known for his work with The Beastie Boys and Beck, Money Mark will bring his cutting-edge keyboard playing to the party.

Multi-instrumentalist Farmer Dave Scher (Beachwood Sparks, Jenny Lewis) will bring his distinctive California vibes and The Chapin Sisters their beautiful harmonies.

An American folk pop trio, The Chapin Sisters are made up of three sisters, Abigail and Lily Chapin and Jessica Craven. Abigail and Lily will open the shows and they'll also join Harper and Band during the main set.

Harper Simon's brand new, self-titled album is in stores now (Tulsi/Vagrant Records) and available on iTunes and Amazon. Harper Simon has recently performed songs from his new album on the Late Show with David Letterman & Jimmy Kimmel Live and has been receiving praise from the likes of NPR, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, WXPN and more.

For his first album, Harper Simon assembled a line-up of extraordinarily talented musicians, both established and contemporary including Charlie McCoy, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Gene Chrisman, Fred Carter Jr., Mike Leech, Steve Gadd, Steve Nieve, and Marc Ribot, as well as Inara George (the Bird and the Bee) and Petra Haden to help him realize his vision of a record that pays homage to the classic LP of the '60s and '70s.

National Geographic to Present Nas and Damian Marley

National Geographic Live will conclude its fall event series with a one-of-a-kind evening with some of hip-hop's most legendary figures. "Distant Relatives," sponsored by VTech, will feature hip-hop icon Nas and Grammy-winning artist Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, son of Bob Marley, in a discussion about the often under-appreciated evolution of and deep-rooted connections between reggae and hip-hop.

Joining them for this conversation, moderated by MTV VJ Sway, will be key players in the development of both musical genres, including Kool Herc, Rakim, Daddy U-Roy, King Jammy, Jeff Chang, Pat McKay, Waterflow and DJ Red Alert.

The event will take place at National Geographic's Grosvenor Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at www.nglive.org , via telephone at (202) 857-7700, or in person at the National Geographic ticket office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Tickets purchased online can be picked up in the lobby prior to the event.

Hip-hop, now a multibillion-dollar industry, originated as a vital form of cultural expression in Africa that was translocated by the slave trade to the Caribbean and the American colonies. It blossomed a half century ago in the dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica, and soon migrated to the parks jams and recreational centers of New York City, where the culture became known as hip-hop.

This evolution forms the basis of the "Distant Relatives" music project, a collaborative effort by Marley and Nas, which will comprise an album set for release in early 2010, a documentary film, performances and a series of public discussions, the first of which is this event hosted by National Geographic.

An open-mic party will be hosted at popular Washington nightclub Zanzibar following the event. National Geographic ticket holders will receive free admission with proof of purchase. For more information on the Zanzibar event, visit www.zanzibar-otw.com.

This event also will be streamed live and broadcast online at www.natgeomusic.net.

OUT TODAY: Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Bat for Lashes has released a Special Edition version of her critically acclaimed sophomore album, Two Suns, on Astralwerks Records. Two Suns 'Special Edition' is packed with rare and unreleased studio gems, cover versions, stunning live tracks, demos, exclusive remixes, and a revealing long-form documentary. Encompassing both an expanded CD and a bonus DVD, the new version of Two Suns includes a 48-minute documentary, following Khan across the globe on the intense personal journey she undertook to create Two Suns. From a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her work in the studio, to the making of her provocative, striking videos, to the evolution of Two Sun's femme fatale character Pearl, Two + Two allows fans to see Khan as never before. TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek adds an ethereal sheen to the remix of "Sleep Alone" and two different versions of "Daniel" adorn the collection - a haunting lo-fi rendition and an earlier incarnation of the song, recorded live during Bat For Lashes' 2008 jaunt touring with Radiohead. If the initial release of Khan's sophomore album was any indication of her visual and musical triumph, then its expanded contents confirm above all else that her achievement has now become, in fact, timeless.

"Pounding on pianos, cranking out delicate little click-clack beats and shivering through choruses with an ultraromantic soprano, Khan proves she's a powerhouse." (3.5 stars) - Rolling Stone

"Natasha Khan returns with the rhythmically complex Two Suns, which signals her daring sonic transition from goth-pop indie darling to high-concept sorceress...Two Suns brims with warm, burbling electronics, delicious psychadelic piano pounding...and indelible melodies..." - BlackBook

"...stunning vocals and obvious talents...Khan is a pleasure as she weaves eerily beautiful tales...- Alternative Press

Introducing...Doug Keith

Doug Keith, an exceptional artist and performer, is set to release his new full-length, The Lucky Ones, on February 3rd, 2010. The Lucky Ones, an 11-song collection on indie imprint The Village Label, vividly showcases Keith's strengths as a guitarist and songwriter, capturing significant emotional truths in every song.

The material on The Lucky Ones ranges from the acoustic starkness of "We Left Everything," to the surging electricity of "The Lucky Ones," to the buoyant textures of "Skip James Radio." His simple-yet-poignant lyrics are layered over soaring instrumental arrangements that are expertly tailored to create distinct aural atmospheres. The link connecting each track is Keith's weathered, knowing voice, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking.

Although The Lucky Ones is only his second full-length solo album, Keith is no stranger to the studio or the life of a touring musician. Music has been his passion for years, and it shows in the beauty and intimacy of his current work. Keith started his career playing bass with punk trio The Gods Hate Kansas, and went on to play with several other punk/avant-garde bands, including noted noise-rock combo Up the Empire. But Keith always worked on his own material, releasing a four-song EP and half of a split 7" single under the name The First Person to See an Elephant. Here's to Outliving Me, his official solo debut in January of 2009, was the first release under his own name and his introduction to international audiences. With The Lucky Ones, Keith delivers a moving batch of songs that are a worthy follow-up - and natural progression - to his stunning debut.

Keith's songs are honest and the emotions are pure, and this comes across in his raw beautiful live performances. Keith is playing select US tour dates; give us a call to see him perform live or for more information.

What the press is saying:

"A well-weathered and sage source of advice and storytelling." - Rachel Kowal, NPR

"[Keith] conjures the spirit of Dylan, Young, and Waits." - Purge

"We will watch Doug Keith and his future work very closely because he will be huge."-Rootstime

*The Soft Pack Announce Debut Album - Out Feb 2, 2010!*

California quartet The Soft Pack are proud to announce the release of their eagerly awaited self-titled debut album, out February 2nd on Kemado Records.

Chances are you have encountered the no-frills razor sharp music of The Soft Pack at some point over the last year and a half. Whether you've seen them share stages with Phoenix, Franz Ferdinand or The Breeders on recent tours, heard their deadpan cover of "Fences" on the Phoenix remix album, or had the whimsical surfer-punk tune "Extinction" from the Muslims EP stuck in your head for the last seven months, the band has laid the groundwork to put out one of next year's best debut albums.

The Soft Pack began as a collaboration of two friends, Matt Lamkin and Matty McLoughlin. Matty played guitar obsessively; Matt also played guitar but fancied himself as a singer/wordsmith too. Both Matt and Matty were frustrated music aficionados who decided that they'd had enough of all the bands in their hometown dressing and sounding like chilly English bands from the 1960s/70s/80s. "We wanted to start a band that played simple, catchy, smart rock songs," says Matt. "There weren't many bands in San Diego doing that at the time. So we did." The aesthetic that Matt and Matty honed early on is the piece de resistance of their debut - a spare yet fiery jangle of guitars, drums, base and pokerfaced singing. Matt and Matty played the San Diego circuit with a revolving roster of bassists and drummers and by CMJ 2008 had recruited permanent members Dave Lantzman (bass) and Brian Hill (guitars) just in time to play a raucous 11 show run at the festival. The much-deserved buzz spread, and the band was picked up on tours with The Breeders, Franz Ferdinand and the Last Shadow Puppets before hitting SXSW '09 and releasing the limited edition 12 inch Muslims EP that flew off the shelves. They signed deals with Kemado Records in the US and Heavenly Records in the UK, and crafted their debut album alongside producer Eli Janney at Saltland Studios in Brooklyn, New York during the late summer of 2009. "We've spent a lot of time talking about music," says Matty. And in their 10-song debut, running at a little over thirty minutes and begging to be put on repeat, it shows. The band is already making waves in the UK, with both Mojo and Q profiling the band as "ones to watch" in 2010 and NME including the album in their picks of key records of next year. Lead single "Answer to Yourself" has been getting a great response from UK radio, with a recent first play on BBC1.

Opening track "C'Mon" kicks off the record with a playful challenge from the band after which the four-piece race through the deliciously poppy and refreshing "Down on Lovin'." By track three, first single "Answer to Yourself," The Soft Pack's signature no-frills sound comes to a head with an irresistible last-gang-in-town swagger. Other highlights include "Pull Out," which captures the energy and wild abandon of the band's live shows while a brief respite can be found in the hypnotic sway of "Mexico," the only song on the album where the pace drops from a sprint. "Parasites," a standout track and favorite of the live set, closes the album with a triumphant finish.

LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION Announces New Album Due Feb. 16

Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You (February 16th, 2010; Domino Records)

We are very excited to announce that Lightspeed Champion - the incredible brain child of former Test Icicles guitarist Dev Hynes - has returned with his second album, Life is Sweet! Nice To Meet You. The follow-up to 2008's Falling Off the Lavender Bridge is an epic collection of twelve pop songs, two instrumental intermissions and one piano 'tude, set for release on Domino Records on February 16th, 2010.

London's Lightspeed Champion emerged from the ashes of Hynes' first band, acclaimed noise rockers Test Icicles. Under the name Lightspeed Champion - a moniker taken from a comic book character he'd created who lived in a world of mathematics - Hynes released one of 2008's most charming debuts in Falling Off the Lavender Bridge. Recorded in Omaha, NE, the album was an orchestral pop love letter to American country twang and boy/girl harmony sweetness, with Hynes' lyrics referencing everything from broken relationships to teen soap opera The O.C. and more. With rave reviews, a performance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and a full American tour under his belt, Lightspeed Champion picked up from his native England, seeking new inspiration, and relocated to New York City. To say the city has never been the same since would be an understatement, and on his newest record, Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You, Dev Hynes showcases not only his incredible ability to write a catchy-as-hell tune, but also his fine ear for brilliant arrangements, once again creating a world all of his own.

Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You is colored by a palette that draws on baroque 60's pop, Girl Group harmonies, classical music and even musical theatre. As a pop culture connoisseur (Hynes has been known to launch into a Weezer cover while writing Queen-style vocal parts and naming his songs with hip-hop slang), Hynes, along with producer and mixer Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), has assembled an eclectic grab-bag of influences: joltingly 70's guitar and synth sounds, classical piano, Serge Gainsbourg, Greek choruses shouting reprisals, Todd Rundgren, and at least one ukelele-driven moment.

All tracks on Life is Sweet! Nice To Meet You were written and arranged by Dev Hynes.

A sneak peak of the lead track "Marlene" can be seen here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DdWHUHxKbTEU

Celebrated Brooklyn quartet Grizzly Bear debuted at # 8 on the Billboard Album Charts last week with their stunning new album Veckatimest, the band’s third studio album. While taking two years off to record this album, a follow up to the band’s celebrated “Yellow House,” the band took breaks from recording to tour with Radiohead, perform with Paul Simon and appear on David Letterman last year, trying out new material. The result is Veckatimest, a remarkable album of homespun elegance, bubbling with orchestral flourishes and haunted harmonies. The band is currently on a coast to coast tour of the US. For complete dates please visit www.grizzly-bear.net.
Critical praise of Veckatimest…
“Grizzly Bear…arranges its songs so carefully that they accrue intricate, hairline detail with no loss of momentum, but the group’s most obvious gift is the vocals…’Veckatimest’ captures a band in full, collaborative density.” – New Yorker
“..an album so fully realized it demands to be heard by a wider audience…genuinely intoxicating.” - Entertainment Weekly
“Suffused with gorgeous choral harmonies ….a lush mix of ornate art rock and swooning pop hooks” – Rolling Stone

ON TV: Diane Birch, Phoenix, The Dead Weather

TONIGHT! Diane Birch Performs on Last Call w/ Carson Daly on NBC at 1:35 AM

“Move over, Amy, Adele, and Duffy: The British blue-eyed soul brigade gets some serious competition from this Yankee on her debut.” – People Magazine “Critic’s Choice Review”

Dazzling singer/songwriter, Diane Birch’s debut album, Bible Belt ( S-Curve ) is causing quite a commotion. Debuting in the top ten album chart on iTunes, hitting # 7 on Amazon, and entering the Billboard Top 100 in her first week was a pretty impressive start for this new and refreshing talent. Her first video, for song “Nothing But A Miracle “, is currently in rotation at VH1. Diane Birch is well on her way to being one of the break out stars of 2009.

Bible Beltis Diane Birch’s first recorded offering, but it’s one of the most accomplished albums you’re likely to hear all year. From the opening track “Fire Escape” to the closing “Magic View,” Diane’s stunning voice – sometimes bursting with buoyant spirit, sometimes plaintive and world-wearied – is rich, soulful and beguiling. Written entirely by Diane and expertly produced by Grammy winners Steve Greenberg, soul legend Betty Wright and Michael Mangini . Bible Belt was recorded in New York and New Orleans with an impressive group of accomplished musicians, all of whom were so dazzled by Diane’s songwriting that they agreed to come together as her band for the recording: Lenny Kaye (of The Patti Smith Group), Adam Blackstone from The Roots, George Porter of The Meters, acclaimed drummers Stanton Moore of Galactic and Cindy Blackman, saxophonist Lenny Pickett, and trombonist Tom “Bones” Malone. And while Diane sings most of the album’s background vocals herself, both Betty Wright and legendary Jive Five lead singer Eugene Pitt join in on occasion to lend their vocal magic.
Check out Diane Birch on Sunday’s Weekend Edition on NPR, where host Liane Hansen talked to her about the album:

***DIANE BIRCH PERFORMS AT JOE’S PUT IN NYC ON JUNE 29th!!!***

“Amy Winehouse-style retro pop, minus dysfunction… Her welterweight voice is strong and fetching… “Fools” conjures Carole King, “Nothing But A Miracle” echoes Aretha…the melodies stick, and girl’s got taste.” – Rolling Stone

“Every few years, a knockout solo siren comes along. I’m talking within the vein of Carly Simon, Tori Amos, and Liz Phair. Ms. Birch, sits alongside the former group of ladies Her voice is as soft as silk, yet oozes grand strength as though she’s been struck down to rise again like a phoenix. – Blackbook
